During the next few days, Louis Longsworth remained steadfast in his feelings about his daughter’s engagement. He’d made it clear to her and anyone who cared to listen—if Maddox stepped one foot onto Lazy L property, Louis would take pleasure in throwing him off. And if he couldn’t physically manage the feat, he’d call the law and have a deputy do it for him.

Surprisingly, Adeline had held her temper and stuck to her plan to remain on a happy, positive keel. She’d not argued, pleaded or attempted in any way to defend her decisions to her father. After all, there was nothing he could do to stop her from marrying Maddox. And, at this point, becoming Maddox’s wife was all that mattered to her.

As for Maddox, he wasn’t the least bit pleased when she’d told him about Louis’s threats. Especially when it meant he couldn’t drive out to the Lazy L to pick up Adeline for a date or simply visit her. If they met for any reason, Adeline had to go to him.

Although Adeline hadn’t known Maddox for very long, it was clear to her that he was a man who didn’t want to back away from any obstacle. And that included her father. As far as Maddox was concerned, Louis was too much of a coward to meet his future son-in-law. But thankfully, for her sake, he’d promised to keep his distance from Louis. How that was going to work once she and Maddox were actually married, she had no clue.

But this evening, Adeline wasn’t going to worry about the problem with her father. The Bronco Harvest Festival was in full swing, and she was meeting Maddox so the two of them could enjoy the festivities together.

The bulk of the festival took place at the Bronco Fairgrounds, but the businesses in town also took advantage of the influx of people. Many of them offered sidewalk sales and free hot chocolate and apple cider.

Traffic was heavy as Adeline drove into town, and as she maneuvered her way down one of the main thoroughfares, she noticed groups of people were gathered up and down the sidewalks.

Maddox had promised he’d be waiting for her at the Bronco Ghost Tours building with a few of his friends. When she reached the street where it was located, she discovered every parking space was already filled. After a futile search for a vacant spot, she decided to park in the alley and walk around to the ghost tour building.

Even though the sun hadn’t yet sunk behind the distant mountains, the air had grown chilly. As she made her way to the end of the block, then down the sidewalk toward Bronco Ghost Tours, she was glad she’d worn a knit scarf and gloves with her shearling and denim jacket. Yet the chilly evening certainly hadn’t put a damper on the town’s celebration.

Conversation and laughter buzzed as people shopped the wares displayed out on the sidewalk. Children dashed about carrying sacks of candy
